Overview
This workshop has been designed to support workers and carers replacing and disposing of bags and monitoring health of people using urinary catheters. This workshop can be run face to face or online. Face to face workshops are recommended as it includes practical skills and assessments.

This workshop for carers and support staff is designed to develop the essential knowledge and skills required to provide care and support to people who require urinary catheters.

A urinary catheter is used to drain the urinary bladder when it cannot be emptied normally. This workshop will familiarise participants with the correct, best practices for urinary catheters insertion, ensuring the procedure is carried out in a safe manner which minimises trauma and infection risks. It also explains the importance and value of privacy, dignity, and respect for the service user.
This workshop covers:
Basic understanding of urinary system
Types of catheters
Infection prevention and control
Emptying and replacing catheter bags
Common complications when using different types of catheters
Common complications associated with using different types of catheters
Indicators of complications requiring intervention, including conditions requiring intervention by a health professional.
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be issued with a Certificate of Completion valid for a period 1 year.
